STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Jan. 28, 2014 – Medina Valley Independent School District selected Skyward, Inc., an industry leading K-12 school administrative software provider, as its student information system (SIS) vendor. The San Antonio-area school district looks forward to receiving support with Public Education Information Management System (PEIMS) data reporting, as well as comprehensive student performance profiles.
After evaluating the Texas Education Association (TEA) preferred student information system providers, Medina Valley selected the Skyward Student Management Suite for its ability to provide data complying with PEIMS submission requirements, making the reporting process smoother, faster and easier. In addition, the district was pleased with the amount of information that can be tracked for each student.
“When reviewing our options for student software, it became quite clear that Skyward had everything our district needed and more,” said Pam Biering, Medina Valley ISD PEIMS coordinator. “The student modules are so comprehensive – educators and administrators have all the information they need about a student right at their fingertips. Also, with TEA reports being of utmost importance to the district, Skyward gives us the necessary tools to submit clean, accurate data on time.”
Medina Valley ISD selected Skyward in the summer of 2013, and recently began implementing and training staff with the new student software. The district hopes to roll out the student management suite at the start of the 2014-2015 school year. So far, said Biering, educators and administrators agree that implementation is going quite smoothly, and they are looking forward to using the software on a daily basis.
Medina Valley ISD is one of more than 200 Texas school districts that utilize Skyward software. The company became a TEA preferred provider in 2011.

Veteran Educators Receive 2014 Dr. Effie H. Jones Humanitarian Award
Alexandria, Va. – Jan. 28, 2014 – Three veteran educators will be honored with the Dr. Effie H. Jones Humanitarian Award during the 2014 National Conference on Education, hosted by AASA, The School Superintendents Association,Feb. 13-15 in Nashville, Tenn.
This award recognizes leaders who exemplify the qualities modeled by the late Effie Hall Jones, educator and AASA associate executive director—her professional and personal commitment to diversifying the field of education with high quality leaders and to ensuring the best education for all students. She was profiled in the film, “Women at the Top” for her work with women who aspired to the superintendency. Jones was also a school administrator, teacher and counselor.
The 2014 honorees are:
Margaret Grogan is a professor of education in the School of Educational Studies at Claremont Graduate University in Claremont, Calif. Originally from Australia, Grogan taught high school there and served as a school administrator in Japan for 17 years. She has been connecting women educational leaders and building networks since becoming a college professor. She taught in principal and superintendent preparation programs at the University of Virginia and the University of Missouri-Columbia and is among the founders of two state organizations for the promotion of women in educational leadership – WELV (Women in Educational Leadership in Virginia) and the Missouri Women’s Network. Grogan is a valued member of Women Leading Education Across Continents, the international women’s network where AASA is a co-founder. As a Barbara Jackson Scholar mentor, she coaches and supports young education academics of color in their writing and their university advancement. A consummate researcher, Grogan will partner with AASA next year to add the lens of women superintendents and associates to AASA’s mid-decade study of the superintendency. A longtime AASA member, she generously shares her own knowledge, skills and resources to promote girls/women and minorities in education and adds substantially to the field.
Caroline Hunter is a former chemist and retired school administrator in Cambridge, Mass. She graduated from Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans in 1968, and shortly thereafter was recruited as a research bench chemist by Polaroid Corporation in Cambridge. In this capacity, she began her direct involvement with anti-apartheid activity. Her activism was a major factor in the divestment movement that ultimately led to the abolishment of apartheid. A social justice advocate, her entire career has been spent teaching and coaching while inspiring others to champion the cause of human and civil rights.
Jose Torres is the superintendent of Elgin U-46 School District in Elgin, Ill. Immediately prior to this position, he served as a regional superintendent in the Chicago Public Schools and has served school districts in San Jose, Calif.; Anne Arundel, Baltimore and Rockville, Md.; Washington, D.C.; and the U.S. Department of Defense Schools. Dedicated to all students, he has addressed persistent gaps in achievement by establishing an office of Equity and Social Justice – the first of its kind in the Elgin U-46 School District. His work has had a noticeable impact by improving student academic success and reducing disengagement. He encourages coaching and mentoring through the district’s teacher mentorship program and the Administrator Internship Program that grooms leadership within the district. Five years ago, Torres developed the “Ten Boys” initiative, which encouraged all school administrators to mentor 10 boys in the school district. In 2012, with his own funds, he launched the Superintendent’s Scholarship Program to provide financial assistance for students who are the first in their families to attend college.
