Barren County Schools Score with One Call Now and SchoolPointe

Notification and Digital Tech Bundle Earns E-Rate Discounts for Kentucky School District

February 24, 2014 – Troy, Ohio – Barren County School District is saving time and money while communicating better with students and parents, thanks to a new partnership between SchoolPointe and One Call Now. When purchased as a bundle, the two services are eligible for E-Rate discounts, meaning significant savings for qualifying schools.

The Schools and Libraries Program (of the Universal Service Fund), also known as E-Rate, provides discounts to help U.S. schools and libraries purchase affordable telecommunications.

Before making the switch, Barren County’s ten-school, 5,000-student district relied on various methods of communication. They sent email reminders and hired a webmaster to create school websites. But the sites were confusing and difficult to use. “It was very challenging,” said Melissa Moss, Instructional Technology Specialist, Barren County Schools. “Things were so complicated that sometimes important communication tasks just didn’t get done.”

Several years ago, Barren County began using One Call Now for routine and emergency notifications. Later, they signed on with SchoolPointe for school website hosting. In 2013, the district requested the One Call Now/SchoolPointe bundle.

Now, the district uses One Call Now for both district-wide and school-specific calls and to record attendance. Many clubs and classes use the service to reach small groups of students. SchoolPointe, meanwhile, has made online classrooms hassle-free. Teachers are posting agendas, class expectations, assignments, and links to educational resources.

Moss estimates that the time her team spends on communication has been cut in half, which translates to additional savings for the District. “Communications with the community, the students, and the faculty are better than ever,” Moss said.

Promethean Selected to Provide Interactive Board Technology & Teacher Training to Over 10,000 Miami-Dade Classrooms

Atlanta, GA (February 20, 2014) Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho has announced that Miami-Dade County Public Schools, the nation’s fourth largest school district, has selected Promethean as the exclusive supplier of interactive boards for over 10,000 classrooms currently without interactive board capability. As a part of a massive district-wide digital transformation initiative, over 10,000 Miami-Dade classrooms will soon feature one of Promethean’s new ActivBoard Touch systems. Additionally, Promethean will implement an 18-month professional development program designed to help Miami-Dade Public School educators unite their curricula and teaching styles with Promethean’s solutions.

“Promethean is proud to partner with the Miami-Dade Public School System to bring forth the technology renaissance in the classroom,” said Jim Marshall, Chief Executive Officer at Promethean. “The opportunity being presented to Promethean is that we can empower Miami-Dade teachers with a new way to motivate and engage students through collaborative digital learning activities in the classroom. Through our partnership, we are excited for the opportunity to work hand-in-hand with Miami-Dade educators to help them evolve how teaching and learning happens in their connected, 21st century classrooms.”

Carvalho’s announcement marks a big step forward for Miami-Dade’s 350,000 students. According to research conducted by the Marzano Research Laboratory of over 5,000 students, Promethean’s classroom technology solutions lead to a sustainable improvement of 16 percentile points for average student achievement. The study demonstrates that the average learner moves from the 50th to the 66th percentile when learning over time in environments that feature Promethean interactive boards and educational tools.

“Technology is vitally important to the process of educating our students,” said Superintendent Carvalho. “The technology offered here will give our teachers the opportunity to share a myriad of educational resources with students. We are proud to work with Promethean in providing this outstanding educational enhancement to our students.”

CDW-G, a leading IT solutions and services provider, will work closely with Promethean to deliver the ActivBoard Touch systems to Miami-Dade. “This historic project has the opportunity to reshape learning for more than 350,000 students,” said Joe Simone, Director of K-12 at CDW-G. “We are combining CDW-G’s vast K-12 experience and ability to scale with Promethean’s technology to create an environment that promotes new learning models and more student engagement.”

The Promethean ActivBoard Touch brings together intuitive touch interactivity and Promethean’s award-winning software to facilitate engaging, effective learning experiences. In addition, the ActivBoard Touch allows teachers to boost classroom collaboration as two students or a teacher and student contribute to the lesson simultaneously. ActivBoard Touch installations will begin later this month and will be complete prior to the beginning of the 2014-15 academic school year.
