The Virtual High School Expands Offerings: Adds Courses in Digital Citizenship,

Space Station Science and Climate Change to Engage Students


Registration for new real world courses open until September 15


Boston — Aug. 24, 2015 — The Virtual High School (The VHS), a non-profit empowering schools with the industry’s best online learning programs, is offering new semester course offerings specifically developed to keep middle and high school students engaged and motivated in a virtual learning environment. The new courses, focused on digital citizenship, engagement with the crew of the International Space Station and climate investigations, hold students’ attention and enthusiasm by capitalizing on their budding interests. Fall registration for all courses is currently open through September 15. The fall semester begins on September 9.


“Our new courses use real-world scenarios and teach practical skills to keep students captivated with the subject matter,” said Carol Ribeiro, President & CEO of The Virtual High School. “That relevance also means that students are exploring potential college majors and career paths.”


One highly anticipated new offering is Digital Citizenship, which helps students develop crucial skills and behaviors needed to become responsible digital citizens. During the course, students review modern day concerns around use of the Internet and social media, gain an understanding of ethical and safety-related concerns and learn how to make good choices online.


Another engaging new course is Space Station Academy, which takes middle school students on a simulated mission to the International Space Station. During the “mission,” students will engage directly with astronauts and scientists who have worked on board the space station, learning how science research on the ISS benefits life on Earth and also investigating the planet with cutting-edge observation technology. Through these and other activities, students will learn about STEM subjects, with an emphasis on Earth, physical science and engineering, and life sciences.


Another offering targeting STEM-related careers is Climate Change, an honors level course with a curriculum that is anchored in the scientific investigation of carbon chemistry, the Earth’s energy budget, paleoclimatology and climate data sources. Students interpret current research, evaluate the latest news and then work together to investigate decision-making processes around public policy. The course instructor is an award-winning teacher who is a NOAA Climate Steward and whose science curriculum has been showcased at the North American Association of Environmental Education Conference, the National Science Teachers Association Conference, the Global STEMx Education Conference and the Massachusetts STEM Summit.

Alexandria, Va. – Aug. 24, 2015 – AASA, The School Superintendents Association and Howard University are hosting the inaugural Urban Superintendents Academyconference in Alexandria, Va., and Washington, D.C., Aug. 28-29, 2015. The conference is a culmination of a partnership between AASA and Howard in an effort to bolster academic excellence and effective public school leadership in America’s urban settings.
