Survey: More than 70 Percent of Teachers Prefer Whooo’s Reading over Accelerated Reader when Given the Choice

 

San Diego — Jan. 4, 2016 — Among teachers who have had experience with both Accelerated Reader and the Whooo’s Reading platform, 71 percent prefer Whooo’s Reading. That was the finding from a recent survey by Learn2Earn, creator of Whooo’s Reading and a company dedicated to providing a 21st century alternative in the reading motivation program space.

 

Sixty-two percent of the 124 survey respondents who currently use Whooo’s Reading have also used or are using Accelerated Reader. Those who preferred Whooo’s Reading commonly cited these three reasons:

“Even teachers who did not express a preference for Whooo’s Reading stated that our platform does a better job of motivating reading and fostering a love of reading. That made for a total of 85 percent of survey respondents who considered our platform to be superior in that respect,” said Raphael Menko, the co-founder and CEO of Learn2Earn.

A survey of more than 2,700 students in grades one through five, released in September 2015, revealed six months of consistently using the platform resulted in students significantly increasing the text complexity of the books they chose, as determined by Lexile measures. The increase in text complexity was particularly pronounced for students who began the year reading books below-grade level difficulty. For example, the books read by struggling third-grade readers increased in text complexity by more than 300L on average while books chosen by normal to strong readers in that grade level increased by an average of 120L in just six months.

Fourth Annual Survey of School and District Leaders Reveals Leading Success Factors for Online and Blended Learning Programs

 

Educators Also Share Why Students Need Fuel EducationTM Online Courses

 

Herndon, Virginia, January 5, 2016 – A “rigorous and engaging curriculum” is the most important attribute of a successful online or blended learning program, according to 91 percent of participants in the fourth annual Fuel Education™ (FuelEd™) Benchmark Study. The study, conducted by MDR’s EdNET Insight, also sheds light on why districts are turning to online and blended learning programs, their implementation best practices, and how they measure quality of an online program.

 

In addition to “rigorous and engaging curriculum,” survey participants also agreed that the following attributes are key to successful online and blended programs:

 

  • presence of student progress tracking and reporting tools;
  • measurement of student progress with initial and ongoing assessments; and
  • instructors who are well-trained in delivering online courses.

 

The benchmark study reports that blended learning is almost twice as popular as fully online learning models. Of the 81 school leaders surveyed, 63 percent report using a blended learning model while 37 percent are using fully online learning models.

 

The survey asked participants which factors led them to implement online or blended learning models. The primary reason, receiving 79 percent of responses, was the need to provide an alternative for students who are not succeeding in traditional brick-and-mortar learning environments. The next most-popular factors for implementing these programs were to:

 

  • provide students with access to courses not available at their schools;
  • give students more flexibility for when and where they can access courses; and
  • provide a personalized learning experience.

 

Educators also noted two other factors that led them to implement an online or blended learning program: the desire to retain students in the school or district; and the desire to improve graduation rates.

 

When asked how to effectively measure the overall quality of an online or blended learning program, school leaders cited the following three attributes as most important:

 

  • an engaging and highly interactive curriculum;
  • demonstration of significant academic progress; and
  • high student attendance and active participation in the course.
