Apperson Updates Its Social & Emotional Assessment Tool

Evo SEL 2.0 provides a streamlined, efficient way to screen students for SEL competencies and address deficiencies

Charlotte N.C. – July 11, 2016Assessment leader Apperson today announced major updates to its award-winning Evo Social & Emotional (SEL) online assessment tool. Evo SEL 2.0 enhances an already sophisticated tool by adding a fresh new look, streamlined functions for both administrators and educators and improved efficiency, making it faster and easier to screen students for social and emotional competencies.

Apperson launched Evo Social & Emotional in 2014 in response to a growing body of research that shows addressing students’ social and emotional needs has a positive impact on their academic performance and helps lay the foundation for lifelong success.

Apperson’s Evo SEL is based on the Devereux Student Strengths Assessment (DESSA), a standardized, strengths-based measure of SEL competencies such as self-awareness, self-management, relationship skills and decision-making. Apperson provides the online platform for administering the DESSA and DESSA Mini universal screeners to quickly identify students’ SEL competencies. It also provides resources and activities to address SEL gaps. Version 2.0 provides the data needed to help SEL program administrators measure the impact of their programs and to help educators understand students’ SEL needs.

“We understand the time demands that educators and administrators face so we have improved Evo SEL 2.0 so that educators can do assessments quickly and see where they are in the process of evaluating their entire class,” said Bill Apperson, chairman of the board of Apperson. “Evo SEL 2.0 includes significant enhancements that we think users will appreciate.”

The upgrades to Evo SEL 2.0 include:

Updated features for administrators. Evo SEL 2.0 allows administrators to assign and control the assessments and lock and unlock what educators can see. It graphically shows all educators’ levels of completion of the assigned assessments. For example, administrators can create an assignment and set a time frame for an educator, site or class to complete the Mini DESSA or the full DESSA then view the dashboard to see the status of all assignments.

Simpler educator navigation with tasks just one click away. A new workflow screen makes it easy for educators to see what is required of them and when these requirements are due.  All educator tasks are labeled on the left side of the screen.  When an educator is in the system assessing students, he or she can easily complete one student and move to another student without exiting the area. In addition, educators can generate reports on the fly and export results for use with administrators and parents.

Expanded intervention strategies. New strategies are based on top SEL curricula. Educators can also upload and tag their own strategies. The strategies section now lists foundational practices so educators can choose strategies based on foundational practices such as Academic Integration or Student Voice.

Easier creating of reports. Evo SEL 2.0 now allows users to create a combined student report of multiple assessments for comparison. The available reporting options (student report, rating comparison, group report, site report) are now all listed in one place, making it easier for users to access the features they need. In addition, there is a program export function making it easy to export data.

Riverview High School integrates the Nureva™ Span™ system.. Expansive, digital workspace deepens collaborative learning
Calgary, Alberta — — Nureva Inc., an award-winning collaboration-solutions company, announces the integration of its Span system into Riverview High School’s innovative, high-tech sciencelab in Riverview, New Brunswick, Canada. The Span system transforms one of the lab’s walls into a 20′2″ (6.15 m) interactive surface, giving groups of Riverview students ample space for student-ledcollaborative learning, such as developing passion projects or working together on entrepreneurialinitiatives. From their laptops, students contribute notes, sketches and images to a shared, 40′ (12.19 m)digital canvas. Then at the wall, they work together to classify, discuss and refine this canvas content. Allinputs are automatically saved in real time, so the canvas is always up to date, whether studentscontribute before, during or after a class.
The Span system creates a collaborative-learning environment unlike any seen before. More studentscan work together in a digital workspace to fully visualize all aspects of a problem, project or unit of study.Seeing more information at once, including the real-time contributions of their peers, enables students todeepen their understanding while developing their creative, critical-thinking and communication skills.
AtRiverview, students’ ability to use laptops or iPads to anonymously contribute to the group canvas hasalso led to noticeable gains in confidence, particularly among quieter individuals. And although thesystem is installed in the school’s science lab, students and teachers have already embraced its use inother subject areas, including history explorations focused on World War I and an English LanguageLearners (ELL) exchange program that incorporates remote collaboration with fourth-grade students inthe United Kingdom.
“Since getting the Span system there has been a noticeable shift in the scope of problems that studentsare working on and the way they’re working together to solve them,” says Ian Fogarty, Riverview High

itslearning Wins Tech & Learning ISTE 2016 Best in Show Award

Cloud-based platform drives personalized student learning, improved curriculum management, professional development and greater district efficiencies

Boston, MA – July 11, 2016 — itslearning, (www.itslearning.net), today announcedthat its newly enhanced personalized learning management platform has been named Best of Show by NewBay Media publications, Tech & Learning, at ISTE 2016. itslearning’s newly redesigned interface sets the platform apart from competitors and it was the only learning management system (LMS) honored as one of dozens of education technology products evaluated at the International Society for Technology in Education’s (ISTE) annual conference, which took place June 26-29 in Denver, CO.

Designed specifically for the K-12 market, itslearning has helped educators worldwide to improve functionality in and out of the classroom using their next generation learning system. The intuitive LMS features –– including curriculum management, communication, collaboration, and analytics reporting –– effectively connects teachers, parents, and students to create differentiated learning solutions for every student.

The main benefits of the newly redesigned platform include simplification and modernization of the interface and navigation, making the platform feel like an extension of the physical classroom, empowering teachers to follow best practices, and increased compatibility with mobile devices. The new system is catered towards users and helping them accomplish goals while putting the focus back on the learner.

“We are committed to helping educators. We want to make their core tasks easier so they can focus on student outcomes – not navigating myriad systems to get their jobs done,” said Arne Bergby, itslearning CEO.  “We are honored to be awarded this prestigious distinction by Tech & Learning, cementing our position as the leading LMS in K-12 education.”

For the third year, Tech & Learning presented its prominent awards program honoring great products at ISTE.  Winners were selected by an anonymous panel of educator judges, who scoured the exhibit hall floor during what has become the largest education technology conference in North America. The judges rated their impressions on a sliding scale, evaluating

areas such as quality and effectiveness, ease of use, and creative use of technology. They also solicited in-person demonstrations to decide which solutions will have the most impact in the classroom and are deserving of Best of Show distinction. The winners will be featured in the August issue of Tech & Learning.
